What FA Members say about overeating:
"I overate due to stress."
I have had an issue with overeating all my life. I always ate over stress before I came into FA. The combination of a stressful job, my drive to be a perfectionist, and poor coping abilities helped me get to 297 pounds. I still have a stressful job, but FA has given me the tools I need to handle stress without food.
"I could control for a while, but I always went back to overeating."
I could control food for a while, but would always go back to overeating. I lost and gained over 80 pounds three times.
When I walked into my first FA meeting, I weighed 230 pounds. I lost 95 pounds in the program. FA is different from anything I had ever tried before. I have a sponsor who cares, and I have tools that really work. I have found peace, support, and freedom from obsession and compulsion with food.
"There's no way I could have stopped overeating on my own."
Eating for me was like being in a contest to see how much more I could eat than anyone else. When we went to a fast-food place for lunch, I ordered an entire extra meal and ate everything. At a friend's house I kept eating and eating, to show how much I liked the food. I ate until I got sick.
I tried to lose weight many times in my life—to no avail. I would stick to a self-imposed diet for a day or two – maybe even a week. Then I would be right back to my old way of eating and the pounds would pile on. My doctor told me to lose weight before he could perform some bladder surgery I needed, but even after finding that out, I couldn’t lose the weight.
In FA, I finally have the help I need. With the weight loss and the healthy diet, my physical health has improved. My blood sugar is always under control and my symptoms of diabetes have disappeared.
There’s no way I could have done this by myself.
